Motto:

WingTsun – that is body and mind forming training or to say it with Bruce Lee: “The body follows the mind.” I would like to add another quote from him, “Knowledge is not enough – we must be able to apply knowledge. Will alone is not enough – we must act.”

Why did you start with WingTsun?

The wonderful Bruce Lee has me, like many others, at a very young age for the subject of martial arts “hooked”. I was already fascinated at that time – at first everything only from newspaper reports – the ease and speed of this martial art. It was and is not about strength and thick muscles or about competitions. To defeat the opponent with brains, heart, courage, fighting spirit and lightness – that’s exactly what I wanted. To be precise, I had already started WingTsun training in 1979 with my then teacher C.C. Dietrichs from Montabaur (not knowing that he had not officially reported me to the association as a student).

With the knowledge level of the 8th student degree, I then started again from the beginning in 1983 – but this time directly with my SiFu GM K.R. Kernspecht. I stumbled across his name in detailed reports in the 1982 issue of Karate-Revue. I still have the collected reports today. And after the first personal meeting and training it was clear to me: this is the right place for me! From then on it meant: Every week to the training in Heidelberg – at that time still in the wonderful castle. Then back home to diligently practice what I had just learned.

Why are you still doing WingTsun?

WingTsun inspired me from the beginning and the fascination of self-improvement, filing and researching did not let me go until today. To check old knowledge again and again, to improve it, to understand it differently. This growing is simply a joy. A life without WingTsun has become unimaginable for me, because it means much more than “just learning to fight”. It has shaped me, my personality and my thinking very much. A standstill is not planned.

What was your standout WT experience?

Looking back, there are many, many beautiful memories in my almost 40-year WingTsun life. To limit myself to only a few for reasons of space is difficult for me. I therefore choose, for example, the joint trip with my SiFu GM Kernspecht to Hong Kong, where we could celebrate the 50th birthday of GM Leung Ting together with many Chinese masters and greats from all over the world.

To be allowed to be present at the very first martial arts study in Plovdiv and to pass it with success belongs to it as well as the visits and courses of my SiFus in my academy. Other highlights were the very first exam, the visits to the castle, the joint trips to Hong Kong, Livorno, etc., my first own school, my self-employment, the martial arts studies at the University of Plovdiv in Bulgaria with the master’s degree, of which I am very proud, my master’s exam on the 5th MG …

What changed for you when you received the 1st HG or 5th MG?

Each stage goal reached had its own charms. After each goal reached, there was a new one. At the same time, each goal reached filled me with pride.

But I am also proud of my students who go their WingTsun ways, of those whom I could accompany to the Sifu title, of those who lead their own groups and have been loyal to me for years. I am looking forward to the future.

I am also proud to have made a profession out of my initial hobby. I certainly got the courage to do so not least through the body- and mind-shaping WingTsun training.
