WingTsun is the connection between mental attitude and physical skills and abilities. The goal is to combine the two.

Why did you start with WingTsun?

Before I started with WingTsun, I had, unlike many of my WT colleagues nothing to do with martial arts. Also Bruce Lee and other martial arts actors never interested me. When I started as a police officer in 1987, I came into contact with martial arts (JuJutsu ) for the first time during my training. At that time I already felt that JuJutsu was unsuitable for the police. The hodgepodge of unrealistic techniques did not necessarily increase my interest in self-defense.
But since I knew that a police officer has to defend himself in dangerous situations, I started to train kickboxing. I believed at the time, professionally inexperienced as I was, that I had found something adequate to make me feel safer in my job.
After only two years of kickboxing experience, I was proven wrong again by a colleague who had trained WT, as we measured ourselves physically. Our duel was quickly decided by him beating my nose bloody. But this was also related to the fact that I had to be convinced of everything not only theoretically, but mostly physically.
So I trained parallel EWTO-WingTsun with my Sihing Kurt Metzler at that time. And again it was the physical confrontation with my kickboxing colleagues that made me change my mind. When I tried stop kicks in kickboxing training against kicks and took off my boxing gloves to be able to hit and hold my opponent better, I only received incomprehension paired with the statement that I was unsportsmanlike.
That was exactly what I was looking for. I didn’t want to be fair and sporting, I wanted to be able to defend myself within the legally permissible limits. The realization for me was, “I need self-defense that is within the lawful bounds and where fairness doesn’t matter.”
I became a WingTsunler.

Why are you still doing WingTsun?

In a nutshell: I have seen and tried many self-defense “systems” because of my interest in self-defense and also because of my professional activity. I just haven’t found anything better yet …

And now to the answer why I train EWTO-WT:
I am enthusiastic and convinced that our system must be constantly developed. Both GM Kernspecht and all other grandmasters live for it. There is no doubt about that. The EWTO has become more open, many have left and many things have also become better in our big EWTO family!

What was your standout WT experience?

Those who have had to seriously fight back have been disappointed afterwards that perhaps they did not use the “techniques/things” they had learned in WT classes. The experience is that one may have simply reacted correctly and displayed a certain composure that one would not have without the realistic training. This realization is outstanding for me and confirms me in what I do.

What changed for you when you received the 1st HG or 5th MG?

The 1st HG or technician grade at that time was really about techniques. I was tested by two strong teacher grades, who are both long gone from the EWTO. On the 5th MG my SiFu GM Kernspecht examined me. The exams can no longer be compared to what was required at that time. Thank God! Combat strength should be shown in the first teacher grades. Willpower you need to continue then. I think I was just as proud to have reached the 1st teacher grade as I was later to have reached the 5th MG. Both graduations stand for a completion (from student grade to teacher grade) and a beginning (from teacher grade to master grade).
For my students I remained the same!
